The Grand Canyon - United States

The Grand Canyon is an impressive landform, forged by erosion caused by the passage of the Colorado River over millions of years. The canyon resembles a labyrinth of rock that runs through northern Arizona in the United States with an area of 446 kilometers long and more than 1,600 meters deep. Much of the Grand Canyon National Park has been declared, a fact that took place in 1919. Decades later, in 1979 would be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO

9 tips you should know before visiting the Grand Canyon

Tips and recommendations for visiting the Grand Canyon on your own
If you are planning to visit Grand Canyon National Park on your own, as they know it in their land, we tell you some tips that will come in handy to prepare that moment you've been dreaming of for so long 😉

1) A little general culture about Grand Canyon National Park
To begin with, which is something that never goes wrong 😉

The Colorado Canyon was declared a World Heritage Site in 1979 and has 1.8 billion years of history, no less, with one of the most striking landscapes in the world. 1,750 plant and 538 animal species from the Canyon to the Colorado River below. At your disposal. Because if there is one trip you have been dreaming of for years, it is this one, we know it 😉

It is currently inhabited by five indigenous tribes: the Hopi, the Navajo, the Havasupai, the Paiute and the Halapai.

What we know as the Grand Canyon is divided into the North Rim and South Rim, both of which are about 10 miles apart. The North Rim is the least crowded, and is open from mid-May to mid-October. The South Rim is the more popular of the two, open all year round, and is the one we refer to here.

2) It's their thing to go with several layers of clothing
Because watching the sunrise and sunset in the Canyon is something you can't miss, but then throughout the day the weather changes a lot and the best thing is to put on and take off layers to the onion, a method that doesn't fail.

3) Put a cap and sunscreen in your backpack
It is essential if you go in the hot season, when the sun is so hot that the height of the National Park (2,135 meters) gives you a headache if you are not careful. A nice way to spoil your day, very easy to prevent.

4) In the Park you can eat well and at a good price
If you don't want to carry food, you can get something to go at the visitor centre at the entrance and at Bright Angel Point you can eat sitting down at the restaurant. In both, the prices are correct: We at the restaurant pay 25 dollars for a burger and a giant salad, with two American-style Cokes: refill (they refill your glass as many times as you like)

5) You can fill your water bottles every few minutes for FREE
You don't have to go around carrying 1.5 liter bottles all the time. That's why they have it set up so well, because there are water stations every few minutes. Free water filling station they call them.

Come on, go with your refillable bottle, you'll find taps every few minutes. It's much more environmentally friendly than littering with empty bottles. 😉 And anyway, if you've taken some disposable water bottles with you, you should know that there are also recycling bins all over the park. With the amount of people that visit the Park every year, they have a great way of putting everything in its place so that we don't have to pay for it. So that we can leave it as it is for future generations.

6) There are bathrooms
Important fact. Besides, and all are in perfect condition and as a curiosity, you should know that water is recycled 😉

7) Never go near an animal, nor feed it. It is illegal to do so
It is possible to find "wild" animals walking quietly in the Park. And when we say "wild" it is not because we are picking on anyone or because they are aggressive, but because you will find them in their natural habitat. You don't have to imagine giant bears, but you do see a lot of squirrels and they warn that by feeding them they can get aggressive. What they recommend in case you see the bigger animals, is to stay at least 30 meters away (approximately the length of 6 cars).

GRAND CANYON, USE
We were cycling along the route and saw a couple of deer so calmly that they didn't even bother to notice us.

And at night, already back with the car, we crossed another one of stroll by the highway. It crossed the road without any hurry, stopping in the middle, at its own pace, and we must say that in none of the cases were we afraid nor did the little animals look problematic. But just in case, it is better to take into account the recommendations of the Park.

8) You can do the tour perfectly with a wheelchair or a child's chair
We're talking about the South Rim section. The trails are wide and fully prepared for comfortable walking. Even in the viewpoints have the accesses perfectly conditioned for wheelchairs.

9) You don't have to be over-trained to tour the South Rim

You will see people of all ages enjoying the Grand Canyon without any problems.
